Living the Principle of Social Responsibility

Tate & Lyle is a global provider of high quality ingredients and solutions to the food, beverage and other industries. They are the producer of Splenda artificial sweetener, among other products.

Fundamental to Tate & Lyle’s business practice is the desire to be “a force for good” in their communities. With facilities and research centres throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia, the company is able to have a truly global impact. “We have a tradition of supporting the quality of life and playing a positive role in the communities where we operate,” explains Chris Olsen, Vice President of Community and Government Relations at Tate & Lyle.

Tate & Lyle team up with the Decatur Park District

In order for their support to have the most impact, Tate & Lyle focuses on programs in four areas: education, arts, health and the environment.

The Decatur Park District is one example of a community initiative that the company has been proud to be a part of. For more than three decades, Tate & Lyle has maintained a partnership with the District that revolves around an annual sponsorship.

“The sponsorship helps the district meet the overall recreational needs of the community, particularly young people, while also providing funds to support programs in the arts and the local zoo,” says Chris. As part of this relationship, Tate & Lyle employees get reduced prices to district activities. “It has become a great ‘win-win-win’ partnership. The Park District wins, the overall community wins, and employees do as well,” adds Chris.

Employees Getting In On “Giving Back”

Employees are actively encouraged to get involved in the community themselves. “This culture of support, combined with an excellent workforce, has led to employees being active in a variety of organizations,” says Chris.

At Tate & Lyle, giving back to the local community is more than just a corporate mandate — it has become an integral part of how the company, and the people that work there, operate every day.
